- 15th World Lake Conference - With the theme, "Lakes- the Mirrors of the Earth," this international conference will be convened in Perugia, Italy during September 1-5, 2014. To be attended by an international audience, it will include technical sessions, high-level policy sessions, poster sessions, student sessions, field trips, banquet, awards ceremony, and development of a conference declaration focusing on the sustainable use of lakes and reservoirs, and the upstream, downstream and sub-surface water systems to which they are connected, including thier scientific and management implications. - IWScience – (September 24-26, Bangkok, Thailand) – The Global Enbironment Facility (GEF; Washington DC) convened the GEF International Water Science Conference ("Setting the International Water Science Agenda for the Next Decade") as a key forum for bringing the key findings and success factors from its international water project to a wider audience. Allowing for the sharing of experience for conference participants also was meant to facilitate the most effective use of scientific information into processes for making better water management decesions. - RIO+20 – United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (June 20-22, 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – RIO+20 was convened in pursuance to UN General Assembly Resolution 64/236 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference included a focused high-level political discussion directed to how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity, and ensure environmental protection on an ever more crowded planet in pursuit of sustainable development. - IAP International Water Symposium (June 25-28, 2012, Sáo Paulo, Brazil) – The Interamerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences convened a international water conference, “Enhancing Water Management Capacity in a Changing World.” It was a continuation of regional water workshops organized by the IAP since 2006. Noting that many hundreds of millions of people still lack access to an improved drinking water source, this symposium focused on target 7c of the Millennium Development Goal (reducing by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by the year 2015). Participants from more than 30 countries discussed key managerial problems and scientific challenges to achieve this important goal.
